Taco Seasoning

Last night I also made a batch of taco seasoning.  This recipe from Heavenly Homemakers is about as easy as it gets.  You just measure, pour and shake.  Even a 2-year old can make it :)  Laura recommends 3 Tbsp. per pound of meat.  I used a little more than 3 Tbsp., and there still wasn't a very strong flavor.  I'll probably add a bit more next time.  This is really good!  And so much better for you than boughten taco seasoning.  I only made a half recipe.  Still plenty to last a while.  And it fits nicely in a 1/2 pt. jar.

Taco Seasoning Mix

1/2 cup chili powder
1/4 cup onion powder
1/8 cup ground cumin
1 Tbsp. garlic powder
1 Tbsp. paprika
1 Tbsp. sea salt

Put all ingredients into a jar and shake!

Three Tbsp. of Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix is equal to one 4-ounce package of taco seasoning mix. I would recommend adding 3 Tbsp. of mix to one pound of browned ground meat for tacos (I'll add a little more than that next time.  I also add some water to the pan while the meat simmers with the seasoning.)

I would also recommend shaking again before each use to make sure the spices are well distributed throughout the mix.

  1. I've also found that you need a little extra seasoning than recommended... same with the ranch mix... not much more, but just a little. Its so good, though - very similar to the store bought taco seasoning mixes!

  2. Yay! Thanks for posting this. I've been wanting to search for a better alternative to the crap that's served up in packets at Meijer.
