The first full week of October. I finally got a few fall decorations out last night ;) Better late than never. This week will be somewhat busy, but nothing too crazy. Today my parents are visiting. They'll go to church with us and then stay for lunch. Monday I'll be hanging out with a friend in the afternoon...we're going to meet at the mall so the kids can play while we chat :) Tuesday will be the farmer's market and Meijer. Wednesday is Kindermusik. And hopefully the arrival of a new niece or nephew!!!! We'll be anxiously waiting to hear the announcement. Thursday I have to go shopping...return a few things and get a few gifts. Friday should be a low key day. Saturday we might go to a pumpkin fest for lunch.
In addition to my dinner plans this week I have to plan some breakfasts! Yesterday I browsed my recipes and some cookbooks and came up with at least 20 recipes I want to try. So I don't think my breakfast goal will be just a one month thing :P I think this week I'll do some sweet bread, fruit and oatmeal.
Yesterday we went to the orchard. They still had bartlet pears, so we got another half bushel for pearsauce. We also got a half bushel of McIntosh apples and a half bushel of Spies for baking and applesauce. Mmmmm, fresh apples. I'm so excited to start filling the applesauce shelf in my pantry. I would like to do at least 100 pints this year if possible since Rebecca eats it almost every day. And we like it too. We also got some locally made organic cheddar cheese, some fresh eggs, 2 buttercup squash (never had that kind before) and a small bag of Fuji apples to eat fresh. So, some of this I'll work into meals. And I'll be working on pearsauce and possibly applesauce this week. I'd like to try apple-pearsauce. And maybe can some pearsauce with another fruit puree added...strawberry, raspberry or blueberry. We'll see.
I bought a bunch of almond paste to make marzipan a few weeks ago. I still have quite a bit left. So I think I'm going to try making banket. I love to bake. I'm Dutch. And I've never made banket. Shameful :P Really, I've never made it because I don't like almond flavored stuff at all. But Justin loves it. So I'll make it for him. And maybe freeze some to have on hand for guests.
I might make granola bars, scones or some kind of muffin this week. They would go with one of our meals, and the leftovers would be for breakfast sometime.
Last week I made 4 chicken pot pies. That's a lot of work...mostly because you have to make 4 pie crusts. But at least now I have today's dinner made already :) The other 3 I'm giving away. And I made a small batch of applesauce with our new apples yesterday to have with lunch today. So good.
I am still researching milk options. We found a couple local farms that do milk shares. But they are kind of expensive. We drove by one of the farms yesterday. They also sell all kinds of meat. So we may be getting stuff from them in the future. Until we decide if we want to try raw milk/do a milk share I'm hoping to get to the health food store once in a while to at least get some better quality milk than Meijer milk.
I think that's it for this week. On to the menu:
S - (early workout, church, parents over for lunch, family time, prep banket pastry and filling) - chicken pot pie, homemade applesauce, zucchini bread (from the freezer) (lunch); grilled cheese, veggie, fresh fruit (dinner)
M - (make banket, put away laundry, playdate) - zucchini bread , banana bread, peach slices (from freezer), canned pineapple chunks (breakfast), banket; spaghetti w/ homemade meat sauce, veggie, breadsticks (dinner)
T - (prep dinner, Meijer, meatless) - egg, cheese, zucchini and potato frittata, mixed fruit, banana bread, broccoli
W - (early workout, Kindermusik, make pearsauce, meatless) - eggplant mozzarella melts, baked sweet potatoes, pineapple
Th - (can pearsauce, shopping, make pearsauce, Justin has class) - leftovers - eggplant
F - (can pearsauce, prep dinner, clean) - stuffed buttercup squash
S - (clean, laundry) - we'll be visiting my family in Grand Blanc and eating with my parents
Buttercup squash is my favorite (and what we grew this year). Hope you guys like it!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you found another great source for meat at one of the cow share farms, too!
I looooove buttercup squash. A bear to cut through, but so velvety.
ReplyDeleteAnother thought about the milk...while living in Ozd, we only drank unpasteurized milk. And we were ok. That was even milked by hand by some old lady, so it probably wasn't the cleanest! But, I did notice the milk tended to go sour faster (in about 6 days). Most of the people there boiled the milk (which definitely pasteurizes it) and then it lasted longer.
Interesting. Thanks. Do you know if it's ok for little kids? That would be my main concern. I suppose I could boil it all first to be safe.

ReplyDeleteJustin, Ryan and Kevin grew up on unpasteurized cow's milk until we moved to Wisconsin when Justin was 8. But since the milk was ours, we knew exactly how it tested for quality, and we were a certified Grade A milk farm. I would not buy it if the farm wasn't certified Grade A. When we sold goat's milk, however, we did boil it for our customers as they were buying it due to sensitivity, allergies, etc and we wanted to play it safe.
Dad
intersting. thanks.
